ReplyDeleteHi Keiji, sorry for the late reply. Which pictures won't load? All of them or just the ones of the bike? The one bike sold already, so only the 50cc scooter is left. I will take some new pics and upload. Thx for letting me know. - Charles

DeleteHi,
ReplyDeletewhen does the shaken on the car expire?
Hi Julian,
DeleteShaken expires August of this year (2013), so a new shaken would be needed. My car guy said it would cost about 90,000 yen (which is the same as I paid when I bought the car, which didn't have shaken at the time...)
Did your car guy say what problems it had and what parts needed fixing or replacing?
DeleteDo you notice any problems with the car as it is at the moment? I only ask because I'm a bit wary of mechanics since I know that some of them charge for unnecessary repairs/replacements, my friend did the shaken renewal process himself because he believed there were no problems with his car and just came out paying around 50,000yen (non kei car).
I mean, the car is older so if you have had experience with cars, you know that anything can happen at any given time. BUT, currently, there is nothing majorly wrong with the car that he said should be fixed. Its old and makes a little noise but works without problem. I originally bought the car from this "dealer" - he and his wife run a small shop that does repairs and has a few used cars for sale. The car was okay, but there was no shaken. To get the shaken he said it would be 90,000 and that is what I was charged. Again, he says it will be about 90,000 for another 2-year shaken. I don't think he is charging extra for repairs or anything. I assume that is just what it costs...
DeleteAs for doing shaken renewal by oneself, I am not sure about the process. I assume that an actual mechanic needs to be involved to clear the car as "safe for the road"...also, prices for shaken vary depending on how new the car is. I believe relatively new cars have cheaper shaken (but of course the car itself costs much more). BUT, 50,000 for a non-kei car seems really cheap. You sure that wasn't the yearly registration fee, which is based on engine size? Anyhow, I can get a second opinion on how much it would cost for another shaken and I'll update the page if the estimate is vastly different.
I don't have all the details on me, but basically, you take your car to the shaken center or whatever it's called, you have to fill out forms, and you take your car through a kind of tunnel which runs a series of tests with you behind the wheel waiting for instructions to test your brakes, lights, wheel alignment, speedo etc. If your car passes all the tests, you should only need to pay for the actual shaken renewal. If not then you have to go and fix/replace the parts the didn't pass and do the test again.
DeleteThe reason why other mechanics will give different quotes is because "in their opinion" certain parts need to replaced or fixed so on top of the base cost of doing the shaken test they add in their labor and parts charges, which may not have been necessary in the first place. It's quite a sham really, my friend went and he said almost EVERYBODY else was a mechanic or from a garage doing the test for their clients. Not saying that every mechanic is dishonest but it's quite common.
Anyway for a kei car I think the base cost is along the lines of 30,000yen, he has an EVO 7 which is one class higher so it cost him 50,000 or 55,000yen I can't remember.
Anyhow I'm not 100% on the car, I definitely want to get one later but priorities may change, so I'm just thinking at the moment.
Hey again, thanks for the info Julian. Interesting that there is just some machine that checks the car over to pass it and get a shaken. I assumed there were shaken certifying mechanics that the local mechanic/dealers have to take the car to. That would be fun just to go see how its done. However, because I am leaving in July and the shaken is good until the end, there would be no need for me to do so. And Im not going to get a new shaken in hope that the car sells. Currently, nothing is wrong with the car, but I dont know what the shaken machine would say. Cars` shaken costs are based on size of car/model but I also think the age matters. Anyhow, thanks for the info. Do you know the location of this shaken test center in Hyogo? If possible I can go down to it and see if they can give me some info/possibly a quote...
DeleteFor Hyogo's testing center.

And for an estimation of how much you should expect to pay if there are no problems with the car.

I totally understand it wouldn't be worthwhile to do the shaken just for sale, I wouldn't either, but I think it would be of interest to potential buyers.
